Aguayo`s Laboratory
Aguayo`s Laboratory
The Francisco Aguayo´s Laboratory is located into the Virology Program, Instituto de Ciencias Biomedicas (ICBM), Faculty of Medicine, University of Chile. Aguayo`s Lab is interested in studying the relationship between viral infections and cancer development. Viral infections are etiologically related to 15% of cancer burden worldwide and Aguayo´s Lab is interested in oncogenic viruses that contain DNA as genetic material. Between them, human papillomavirus (HPV) is etiologically related to cervix-uterine, oropharyngeal and anogenital tumors. The role of this virus in other extragenital tumors such as prostate, oral, colon, breast and lung cancer is unknown and remains to be investigated. Other important oncogenic DNA viruses are polyomaviruses (PyV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV).
